Welcome to our site! The purpose and mission of the United Association Local 716 State of Maine is to:

  • Organize those workers and employers in the plumbing, pipefitting, steamfitting and HVAC service industry who do not share the benefits of union representation.
  • Sponsor and support legislation which safeguards the safety and health of workers and the public, protects the rights of workers and promotes a fair, free, and just society.
  • Foster and promote programs on occupational safety and health, membership education and training and industry technological advances.
  • Encourage and promote stronger labor-management relations.
  • Promote the advancement of the organized plumbing and pipefitting industry for the benefit of its members, employers and the public

    This Friday November 29th help stand up for Walmart workers everywhere as they strike and take action across the country.

    Come join an action in Ellsworth, Scarborough, Augusta or Auburn in solidarity with Walmart workers and all low-wage workers in Maine.  

    Strikes are spreading through Walmart’s stores nationwide to protest poverty wages and poor working conditions.  Recently, Walmart workers in Ohio walked off the job and 50 protesters were arrested outside a Walmart in Los Angles. Last week, Walmart workers in Chicago and Seattle joined their coworkers in going on strike to protest Walmart’s retaliation against those who speak out.

    Please stand up for low-wage workers everywhere by joining us on Friday, November 29.

    Did you know...

     

    •    As many as 825,000 Walmart workers are paid less than $25,000 a year because of low wages and not getting enough hours.  

    •    Workers can’t raise their families on these poverty wages. In Ohio, associates held a food drive – for each other – to make sure everyone had Thanksgiving dinner.  Anthony Goytia – father of three - relies on payday loans and even sells his own plasma to cover the bills. After 11 years at Walmart, Patricia Locks makes only $19,000 a year and relies on food banks and food stamps to feed her teenage daughter.

    •    Because Walmart is paying so little, many workers are forced to rely on taxpayer-funded programs just to cover the basics.  Walmart workers are estimated to rely on more than $900,000 in food stamps, Medicaid and other public supports at just one of the company’s 4,000 stores. Americans want Walmart to take responsibility as the largest employer in the country.  We want Walmart to improve its jobs, and help improve the economy. 

    •   The six heirs of Sam Walton, founder of Walmart, have a combined net worth of $144.7 billion.

    •   Public policy organization Demos issued a report this month showing that Walmart could pay every employee at least $14.89 per hour, without raising prices. Walmart spent $7.6 billion last year to buy back shares of its own stock and further enrich the Waltons. The buybacks did nothing to boost Walmart’s productivity or bottom line. These funds could provide Walmart’s low-wage workers a raise of $5.83 an hour.

    Beginning December 2, 2013

    Courses Start December 2, 2013!

    Kennebec Valley Community College is now offering Propane and Natural Gas licensure preparation Courses.  These courses are designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to pursue licensure and certification as Propane and Natural Gas Technicians.  

     

    KVCC's courses include the National Propane Gas Association's Certified Employee Training Program (CETP) and the Maine Natural Gas Supplement.  Successful completion of these courses fulfills the training requirement for the State of Maine's Propane and Natural Gas Technician - Appliance Connection and Service Technician endorsement.

    KVCC offers the following Propane and Natural Gas Courses:   

     

    PNG1 010 -  Basic Principles and Practices - December 2 - December 14, 2013.  This course is designed for all personnel who want to work in the propane industry.  It provides an overview of key concepts and safety strategies for working with propane.  This course is a prerequisite for the more advanced propane and natural gas courses (PNG1 020, PNG1 030). The course fee is $385 and includes CETP e-book and exam. This course is offeredon Monday and Wednesday from 5-9 p.m. with an exam scheduled on Saturday, December 14th at 9 a.m.  

     

    PNG1 020 - Appliance Connection and Service Technician Course  - January 6-March 8, 2014.  This course  is designed for installation and service personnel, sales personnel, and managers and supervisors, although employees throughout the propane industry will find this training useful.   The course fee is $1,445 and includes CTEP e-books and exams.  The course is offered on Monday's & Wednesday's from 5-9 p.m. for 9 weeks.  Exam dates: Saturday's at 9 a.m. following each course segment.

           

    PNG1 030 - The Basic Electricity for Propane Appliances Course - March 10, 12, 17 & 19, 2014, 5-9 pm with an exam on Saturday, March 22nd, 9 am. This course is designed for the installation and service personnel in applying the basic principles of electricity to service propane appliances.

     

    Successful completion of all these courses and exams will help students achieve the State of Maine Propane and Natural Gas Technician - Appliance Connection and Service Technician endorsement.  Additional eligibility requirements for CETP certification do apply and are not available through KVCC.  Please visit the State of Maine's Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation for more information on license requirements.
